2020. Remember when that was a year in which science fiction writers would set their stories in order to make them seem so futuristic that anything was plausible? Now 2020 is so close at hand that we can already make accurate predictions about the trends that will shape the way we work every day.
Further exploring that topic, Top10OnlineColleges has created an infographic exploring the state of trends and technology right now, and how they will determine who is successful less than a decade from today. They identified six drivers of change:
- Extreme Longevity
- The Rise of Smart Machines and Systems
- Computational World
- New Media Ecology
- Superstructured Organizations
- Globally Connected World
In the infographic, they take a look at the future work skills that people will need to develop as a result of these drivers. While they are all interesting, there were a few that really stood out as relevant for you, our readers:
1. Social Intelligence: Ability to connect to others, to sense and stimulate reactions.
As social media marketers, one of our most important goals is to generate engagement among our followers with quality posts. This requires an ability to anticipate what will be relevant for them, and will result in conversations and interactions.
2. Cross-Cultural Competency: Ability to operate in different cultural settings.
While most modern business people know that they need to be culturally aware and think globally, many forget to think globally when it comes to their marketing. Especially if you are selling something, it’s a good idea to translate your website.
3. Computational Thinking: Ability to understand data based reasoning.
This is a big one. As vast amounts of data are becoming increasingly available, so are the tools we have to analyze them. And it’s not just Google Analytics – have you seen Twitter’s analytics update?
4. Design Mindset: Ability to develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes.
Upon first reading this I thought ‘Yes! Communication IS becoming increasingly design focused!’ but then I realized they weren’t talking about that kind of design. My initial thought it nonetheless true, and you should all be using Pagemodo Post Designer.
Check out the other important work skills that you will need to possess (and hire for!) by the year 2020. (Even saying it now, still sounds like a made-up year.)
